Common Questions Before Beginning Therapy

  • Starting therapy can feel like a really big step, and it’s completely normal to feel nervous or anxious before your first session. In fact, those feelings can actually be a good sign — they mean this is important to you and that you’re ready to begin.

Therapy is an investment in yourself, and beginning takes courage. If you’re feeling some nerves right now, it’s proof that you’re taking that investment seriously.

  • The real power of therapy doesn’t come from your therapist giving you the perfect answer — it comes from the relationship you build together. When you feel safe, understood, and free of judgment, you can take an honest look at your life and begin to make lasting changes.

Therapy isn’t one-and-done. Think of it like going to the gym — you wouldn’t expect a six-pack after one workout. Progress builds session by session. Research shows that many people begin to notice steady improvements between sessions 6 and 8, with deeper, lasting change often showing up around session 12 or beyond.

Consistency is key. Once a week is ideal, and every other week still allows for real progress. Even once a month can help, but the most important part is finding a steady rhythm that keeps the work moving forward.

  • Your first session is a chance to meet your therapist and talk through the issues that brought you in. You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable — there’s no pressure. Your therapist will likely ask a few questions to better understand you and may offer a plan for what working together could look like over the next several sessions.

Your biggest job in the first session is to notice whether this feels like a good fit. Ask yourself three simple questions:

    1. Do I feel judged by this therapist?

    2. Do I feel like they’re competent to help me?

    3. Can I imagine enjoying working with them?

If you can say yes to these, you’ve probably found an excellent therapist. If not, that’s okay too. If things still don’t feel right after two or three sessions, just give us a call. We’ll help connect you with someone else — no awkwardness, no hard feelings. Good therapy only happens when the relationship is right.
