Is it normal to feel nervous about starting therapy?

Is it normal to feel nervous about starting therapy?
Yes. Feeling nervous before starting therapy is one of the most common experiences there is, and it says nothing about whether therapy is right for you. The Cleveland Clinic points out that nerves before a first session are normal, and that knowing what to expect calms most of them. So here is what to expect, plus one reframe that helps almost everyone who walks through our door.
Why the nerves make sense
You are planning to tell a stranger things you may never have said out loud. Of course your body reacts. Nerves before something new and personal are your alarm system doing its job, not a sign that the decision is wrong.
There is a deeper layer too. We almost always feel embarrassed about the things we hide. But the embarrassment is often not the reason we hide them. It is the result of hiding them. Secrets get heavier in the dark. Saying them out loud is usually what makes them lighter.
The fear is the requirement
It is not possible to be brave without being afraid. Fear is not the opposite of courage. It is the ingredient. If starting therapy did not scare you a little, it would not count as brave.
So the goal is not to wait until the nerves fade. They may not. The move is to do it afraid.
What the first session is actually like
Lower stakes than you are imagining. Your therapist will ask about your history and what brings you in. You talk. They listen and ask questions. Nobody pushes you deeper than you are ready to go, and nobody expects you to have the right words for everything.
The American Psychological Association notes that it can take several sessions to feel comfortable opening up with a new therapist, and that this is completely normal. You set the pace. You are allowed to say, "I am not ready to talk about that yet," and a good therapist will respect it.
You do not need a rehearsed story
A lot of people delay booking because they feel they should have it figured out first. What exactly is wrong, when it started, what they want from therapy. You do not need any of that.
"I am not sure why I feel this way, I just know something is off" is a perfectly good opening line. Sorting out the rest is the therapist's job, not your homework. If it helps, jot down two or three things you want different in your life and bring the note. That is more than enough preparation.
Ten seconds of courage
Try this question. If you were the bravest person alive for ten seconds, what could you do in those ten seconds that would change your life? Most of the things that scare us only need about ten seconds of courage. Booking a first appointment is one of them.
You do not need to feel ready for the whole process today. You need ten brave seconds to send a message or make a call. The rest happens one session at a time, with someone whose whole job is to make it easier.
If it would help to know what you are walking into, our new clients page walks through the whole process step by step, and you can meet Ryan to get a feel for who we are before you ever reach out.
